Rando-Trail & Nature

You are a runner, maybe a hiker or perhaps just someone who likes being out in Nature. Well, this site is for YOU.  Rando-Trail & Nature was created for people like US, so feel at home and Contact us if you feel the urge, we would be happy to assist or share or provide a comment. We hike and run all over Mauritius so you might find someone near you.

Rando Trail & Nature was started by a small and enthusiastic group of trail runners who wanted to encourage others in enjoying the remarkable trails in Mauritius ...

The name was chosen to represent the major preoccupations of the group - hiking (randonnés in French), trail-running (trail) and the environment (nature) where we are active.

It has been frequently said over the generations that one of the major attractions of Mauritius is a wonderful series of mountains. From the first time that man arrived here, documents in the archives record this fascination. Mark Twain comments on them as “Rugged clusters of crags and peaks, green to their summits; from their bases to the sea a green plain with just tilt enough to make it to the water drain off.”  The mountains fascinated him, “these architecturally picturesque crags and knolls and miniature mountains..” which was mirrored by many other visitors over the centuries.

Yet despite the availablity of "minature" mountains which are easy to climb, the public in Mauritius does not really explore them. Unlike the Pyrenees or the Appalachians or the Drakensberg ranges, which attract local people as well as huge numbers of tourists, Mauritians in general prefer more sedentary activities. And the country is also marketed to tourists as a tropical paradise of emerald lagoons, white beaches and sun - which it is but not only...

Luckily perhaps, as this means that when one hikes or runs in the mountains you are often alone, close to Nature and free.

So, whether you climb, hike or run trails, explore the terrain, respect the environment and enjoy yourself!
